UN Reports Backsliding on Women’s Rights Globally

A recent United Nations assessment has delivered one of its strongest warnings in years: women’s rights , once seen as steadily progressing , are now facing alarming setbacks across the world. This comes nearly thirty years after global leaders united behind the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark commitment to achieving full gender equality. Instead of celebrating three decades of progress, the UN reports a troubling reversal. Nearly one in four countries has acknowledged a decline in gender equality, fuelled by a dangerous mix of rising authoritarianism, shrinking civic spaces, digital harassment, and weakened democratic safeguards.

While many nations have introduced new laws to protect women, these legal victories often struggle to take root in daily life. Experts point out that entrenched patriarchal norms, discriminatory cultural practices, and a surge in online misogyny continue to restrict women’s ability to participate equally in public life. From political offices and boardrooms to classrooms and digital spaces, women still face structural barriers that silence their voices, limit their opportunities, and expose them to disproportionate risks.

The UN stresses that these regressions are not isolated incidents, but symptoms of a wider global pushback against human rights and gender justice. As the world approaches the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action in 2025, the organisation is urging governments, activists, and global institutions to reignite momentum. Stronger commitments, robust protections, and inclusive policies are urgently needed , not just to safeguard the hard-won gains of the past, but to drive genuine transformation for future generations of women and girls.

At a moment when progress hangs in the balance, the UN’s message is clear: gender equality is not a finished agenda. It demands renewed political courage, global solidarity, and an unwavering commitment to creating a world where women can live, participate, and thrive without fear or discrimination.
