When Wars Target Women: The Human Cost of Global Conflict

A new report by UN Women has painted a chilling picture of how global conflicts are disproportionately harming women and girls. According to the data, 676 million women now live within 50 kilometers of active war zones , the highest figure recorded in decades. Civilian casualties among women and children have quadrupled over the past two years, while cases of sexual violence linked to conflict have risen by 87 percent.

UN officials warn that this marks a devastating rollback in human rights protections. Despite decades of advocacy, women remain largely absent from formal peace talks , even as they lead relief efforts, care for displaced communities, and rebuild war-torn societies. “It’s not just collateral damage,” said one UN spokesperson. “Women are increasingly being targeted as a weapon of war.”

From Sudan to Ukraine and Gaza, countless women have been forced to flee, often with children in tow, while healthcare, education, and basic safety vanish. Humanitarian groups stress that including women in peace negotiations isn’t symbolic — it’s strategic. Studies show that peace agreements are more likely to last when women are part of the process. The UN is now urging nations to ensure that gender perspectives and women’s voices are central to future peace and security efforts.
