At the opening day of the G20 Summit 2025, a record number of women delegates and ministers from across the world emphasised the need for economic systems that intertwine sustainability and gender inclusion. Leaders such as U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Indonesia’s Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati called for investment in women-led green industries, equal access to innovation, and more inclusive labour markets.

A key highlight was the adoption of the “Gender & Green Growth Compact,” which commits participating countries to boost women’s employment in renewable energy, technology and sustainable infrastructure. The document estimates that raising women’s participation in these fields could add more than US$5 trillion to global GDP by 2030.

Von der Leyen remarked: “We cannot reach climate neutrality without gender neutrality.”

Analysts note that this summit is redefining how economic recovery, environmental policy and gender equality are being viewed , not as separate agendas, but as one integrated framework for progress.

As the G20 negotiations unfold, this moment may become a benchmark in global policy.

When women take their place at the heart of the world’s economic stage, the promise of a sustainable, inclusive future becomes more tangible and for once, gender equality isn’t a side note, but a headline.
