Digital Violence: The UN’s Call to Protect Women in Cyberspace

The United Nations has raised an urgent global alarm about the growing wave of digital violence against women, emphasizing how the online world has become a major extension of real-life gender-based abuse.

As highlighted during the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the UN notes that women today face an entirely new landscape of threats , from deepfake videos and non-consensual image sharing to harassment campaigns, cyberstalking, impersonation, and targeted hate speech.

These attacks often begin behind the safety of a screen but have severe emotional, psychological, and sometimes even physical consequences.

The UN points out that many countries still do not have strong legal safeguards to criminalize such acts, leaving survivors without proper support or justice.

At the same time, digital platforms often fail to act quickly or transparently, allowing harmful content to spread for days or even weeks. The UN is urging governments, tech companies, and civil society organizations to work together to build safer digital spaces, strengthen accountability, protect young women and public-facing women, and ensure that online spaces become places of expression and empowerment , not new battlegrounds for gendered abuse..
