On 27 November 2025, five remarkable women researchers in Canada were celebrated by L’Oréal Canada in partnership with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and major scientific institutions, with the 2025 L’Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science awards. These scientists come from universities across the country , from McGill in Montreal to Saskatchewan , working in fields as diverse as cosmology, neuroscience, earthquake engineering, aquatic ecology, and molecular biology.

Each awardee has made a significant contribution to science: for example, one is using advanced cosmological models to probe the earliest evolution of the universe, another is investigating the biological underpinnings of mental health to foster better gender-sensitive treatment, a third is developing new earthquake-resistant building designs, while others work on environmental conservation or immunobiology.

What unites them is not just excellence in research, but also mentorship, science communication, and a drive to make science more inclusive and socially relevant. The awards recognise not just their past achievements, but their potential to shape the future of global research.

For many , especially young women and girls considering STEM careers , this is more than a headline. It’s a signal: women belong in labs, in leadership, in discovery. It’s a reminder that science doesn’t lose strength when it becomes more diverse; it gains richness, empathy, and insight. On 27 November, the world of science welcomed powerful new voices , and that matters for all of us.
