In a significant move to bolster female self-reliance, the Directorate of Employment (J&K) and the J&K National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) hosted a dedicated Women Entrepreneurship and SHGs Mela at Government Degree College, Kathua.
The event, inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma, served as a strategic platform to integrate women into the formal economy through Mission YUVA.
Key Highlights of the Mela
- Financial Empowerment: The Deputy Commissioner distributed loan sanction letters to aspiring female entrepreneurs, providing the capital necessary to launch or scale their business ventures.
- Knowledge Sharing: Successful entrepreneurs shared their “business journeys,” offering peer-to-peer motivation for new SHG members.
- Inter-Departmental Support: Clear directives were issued to government departments to provide “handholding” support—ensuring that women aren’t just starting units, but sustaining them long-term.
Showcasing Local Innovation
The mela featured a diverse range of stalls where Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and NGOs displayed products that highlight the region’s agricultural and artisanal potential:
- Agri-Ventures: Mushroom cultivation and honey production.
- Culinary Arts: Traditional foods and specialty pickles.
- Craftsmanship: Artificial decorative items and value-added local goods.
“The success of these groups in selling local products and adding value is making them truly self-sufficient. Our mission is to ensure every woman has the awareness to start her own unit.”
— Piyusha Khajuri, Assistant Director of Employment
Impact on the Community
Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma noted that these SHGs are performing a dual role:
- Job Creation: Turning job seekers into job providers.
- Economic Growth: Promoting local production and reducing dependence on outside markets.
