In Uttar Pradesh, the Lakhpati Didi initiative is helping rural women transition from household roles into entrepreneurs contributing to the state’s economy through self-help groups and income-generating activities. The programme aims to support women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to achieve an annual household income of at least ₹1 lakh, opening up avenues for financial independence and business growth.

Since its implementation, the initiative has mobilised over 98 lakh women across approximately 8.93 lakh SHGs in the state. These women are engaged in a range of livelihood activities that go beyond traditional roles, helping them earn sustainable incomes and drive economic activity in their communities.

By mid-2025, around 11.15 lakh women self-reported as Lakhpati Didis, meaning they either achieved or are on track to achieve the targeted income level through their entrepreneurial efforts. This reflects a growing trend of women utilising skills, training, and financial support to build businesses in sectors like agriculture, retail and services — strengthening both local economies and household finances.

The impact of the programme extends beyond income figures: it has given women greater confidence, stronger roles in decision-making, and increased participation in the workforce. By enabling access to credit, markets and collective organisation through SHGs, initiative participants are reshaping traditional gender roles and contributing to broader economic growth across Uttar Pradesh’s rural landscape.
